This Font Needs a Name

Monday, September 22, 2003

I’ve been working on a new pixel font loosely based on the typeface seen in the opening credits of the original Italian Job.  I say ‘loosely’ because when watching it I hurriedly scribbled down some of the letters I liked onto a scrap of paper.  The word I scribbled down was ‘Oakhurst’ as in Oakhurst Productions, and it’s since been the working title of this font.

But if you know me you’ll know that my font titles are rarely that normal sounding.  Any suggestions?

Oakhurst

how about ‘robot blood’?  that’s a good font name, isn’t it?

no? fine.

hey, i have a question for you but since you didn’t respond to my e-mail sent, i thought i’d try you here.

your site is so fantastic that it got me to thinking, did you go to school for graphic design?  if so, where did you go and would you recommend it?

i’m sorry, it’s not a very fun comment, but i’m on a mission.

I will answer that one for you Vera, I am Johnny’s press secretary.

From an early age John Carl Martz was no stranger to adversity. Born in one of the poorest areas of Metropolis, the “Suicide Slum” ghetto, Martz endured a hellish childhood until his abusive parents were mysteriously killed in a car accident.

The insurance money paid to the then merely 13 years old Martz was three hundred thousand dollars. As Martz had not yet entered into his majority, he was passed from foster home to foster home, until he was old enough to take charge of his own affairs.

Martz cleverly turned his three hundred grand into two million dollars through an association with the drug-runners of the Metropolis mafia.

At the tender age of twenty, John Martz was already building a business empire.

Mentored by Wang Fong of The Cartel, a crime ring specializing in illegal fonts, Martz graduated from Conestoga College with degrees in engineering and fontography.

Fong was eager to exploit Martz’s font designs for The Cartel, but in a typical Martzian move, soon The Cartel was under John Martz’s control. From that moment on, the profit from Martz’s fonts would go exclusively to Martz’s empire—a legitimate empire named MartzCorp, now that John Martz was sure to appear to function within the law.

The breakout hit ‘Girls Are Weird’ brought John Martz’s fonts to worldwide attention. It was now clear that a new font Czar was in town to stay. With legitimate fonts doing business in the billions, and MartzCorp’s illegal activities well-hidden, it seemed that John Martz’s stranglehold on Metropolis and truly, America, was unbreakable.

That is ... until Superman debuted on a windy day in downtown Metropolis. Reading the reports of Superman’s rescue of the experimental Space Plane Constitution, John Martz vowed to kill or convert this latest threat to MartzCorp’s domination.

You should name it Mavis. It reminds me of an old pixely version of Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing.

maybe “robot grease cart” and use “robot” at the beginning of each font name to support a Robot Johnny Foundry identity?
