Time for a Beer

Wednesday, August 4, 2004

I was in the LCBO last night (the booze store, for you non-Ontario folk), and lo and behold, their Time for a Beer campaign uses my font Big Fish Ensemble.

Let it be known that the Liquor Control Board doesn’t pay for its shareware.

i suggest you don’t pay for your booze....steal it!!

or better still, take, then drink but then leave half of the content in the bottle..... claiming what is left is the liqour control boards share.

Lloyd says:

I would say something about how I’m going to boycot the LCBO, but that would be like you boycotting The Peanuts.

Ben says:

You could just boycot the LCBO and go to the Beer Store instead, unless you’re one of them hard liquor types.

paperfingers says:

i’m all for the creative commons, but you’ve gotta draw the line here.

they’ve got your font all over the ‘fan pack’ for dido’s sake.

(that is dido isn’t it?)

Ryan says:

You should demand some Toyalties!!

Aaa Cha Cha Cha!!

RyanO says:

That’s pretty messed up… I wouldn’t sit quietly if I were you. Take a stand! Raise your fist high in the air and demand your toy!

I’ll start the boycott against the LCBO… of course, I’m not sure how effective it would be coming from the the states.

eddie says:

c’mon, they should at least give you some free beer.

D says:

You have to find out who their agency is, or who designs their in-store promotions. Once you know that, I suggest a web-based campaign of shame and humiliation, designed to mock, disgrace and discredit them with extreme prejudice.

erinn says:

I’ll fight the good fight!  I’ll boycott the LCBO too… Wait what am I saying??  hmmm, ok… I’ll boycott them everyday except for Saturday then… smile

Wait, that won’t work either!  Ok!  I’ve got it!  I’ll boycott only the cooking classes!  Yep, that’s what I’ll do even though I’m really looking forward to the next class.... yep, uh-huh… ok so that’s not going to work either.

OK, I won’t boycott anything, but I’ll give them a piece of my mind and a dirty look when I walk in there!  You’d better believe it!  FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!!

I wonder if they’ll still let me take the free magazine??

I agree, shame and humiliation is the route to take ... especially considering how insanely reasonable your request for compensation is!

james says:

Hey, I actually know the guy who does the Vintages web site for them, so I could find out if he does the beer stuff, too. I’ll send him an email tomorrow…

Robs says:

I find it pretty sad, its not like you were playing Adobe and saying “to use my font you must use our manager and pay for the font set at 199.00 USD” ... you want peanuts!  They should send you peanuts… chocolate covered in respect.

8-6-04 · 11:20 am

Robot Johnny says:

Mmm… chocolate covered peanuts!  Maybe I should re-license my fonts as chocolatecoveredpeanutware!

kevin says:

i won’t drink any beer this weekend ... of course I may go blind from my whiskey intake.

sam moose says:

i have an idea...let sneak out late at night & remove all the shop signs from the LCBO when they are all closed… & pop them on the front of our houses!!
*
now i live in the United Kingdom so i shall not be getting up in the middle of the night as.. well they will still be open (due to the time difference) .. but i will be removing a sign with my will...... another small point..do the LCBO have shops?

8-7-04 · 9:33 am

sam moose says:

of course they have shops!! this is how the whole shinanigans began!!
*
answering my own questions…
*
Oh let me buy a round…

Gord says:

Can anyone say “free year’s supply of Stella Artois?”

8-7-04 · 1:11 pm

Keri Smith says:

What about slipping it in to a media source as an interesting news item?  Not a smear campaign per sey, think more like free publicity for Robot Johnny.

Now let’s see, where do you work again?

james says:

I did email my guy on Friday and he says he’ll forward it to the marketing dept. He thinks it was an agency that did the beer campaign for them, but let me know if you hear anything…
