I’ve been toying around with the recent 1.5 release of WordPress for a seeeecret project (shhhh), and I think I’ve fallen in love. I’ve badmouthed WordPress before, but this latest release makes MovableType seem clunky and unwieldy. So, next on the pipeline: a complete rehaul in WordPress (and redesign) for RobotJohnny.com.

Hey congratulations. I’ve been using WordPress since I started my site (October ‘04 — I know! Old Man River!), so, without anything to compare it to, I can definitely say it’s the best. Good luck!

Glad to see you finally making the switch. Wordpress 1.5 is an amazing leap forward for the product. Keep us updated on your progress!

Sweet! What do you like about it, John? I’m still trying to figure out the Theme Editor.
Robot Johnny says:
I love that it’s builds a site entirely in PHP so that changes are dynamic and immediate. And the ability to edit and login to the admin controls from any post or comment is pretty scha-weet, as the kids say.
What about the theme editor are you trying to figure out?
MrBlank says:
I was thinking of trying it out too, but I’m so used to MT.
Is there a good way to kill comment spam with Wordpress? MT Blacklist doesn’t really cut it for me. I’d switch just to get rid of the spammers.

REDESIGN????? cool ...

Hey RoJo!
I just switched my journal over to word press a few weeks ago. Since you’ll be in the same position as me, here’s a few thoughts.
1. There are things that MT does better then WP. WP is somewhat limited by design. I find that MT’s entry loop is much more versatile.
2. It’s programmed by poor programers. So much so that a programmer I know wants to re-make word press, properly.
3. It’s over-hyped.
4. I still like it better than MT based on the php principal, and I believe you will to.
5. Support is either lack-lustre, or non existant. Every problem I’ve encountered and sought an answer to I’ve only found more people with the same problem and even less answers. Expect to find many unanswered questions on the discussion board.
6. It’s nice to have dynamically generated EVERYTHING!
7. Keep back ups of every change!
8. Learn some basic php, fast.
I may seem to be coming down hard on WP. I feel justified by my experience. But even after all was sorted out, and my site was the way I wanted it, I still liked WP better than MT based on it’s inherent php versatility.
kartooner says:
I’ve got it mostly figured out, John, but I’m just trying to make sure I’m utilizing the Wordpress code efficiently.
So far I’m really digging it though. I just need to work on a new design and that’s becoming difficult since the server I’m on (hosted with Dreamhost) has been sluggish. I guess I’ll need to deploy a testing server again. Oy!
I’m really looking forward to your Wordpress design though.

I would’nt agree with Ryan about his comments..
It’s programmed by poor programers. So much so that a programmer I know wants to re-make word press, properly.
...get the spelling of programmers correct first Ryan...and who is your mysterious programmer who you know
that wants to remake wordpress,sounds
stupid what does he want to do reinvent
the wheel,wordpress is developed as
a community project and is open
source unlike movabletype which is
commerical in many ways, the code is
free to hack and modify, there are
already a number of really great designs that have been created from
wordpress core....ryan’s just talking crap there...on that point...I just updated my wp 1.2 mingus to wp 1.5 in
a few minutes no hassles and no setup
issues.
About this site and a redesign...well
personally I think its real good
in the current design state,If the author can comeup with some thing real
cool etc.kudos to him....but its a shame thinking this site needs a redesign cause I’d list it as no.1
Ryan says:
I don’t want to start anything on your journal Johnny. So I’ll just stick to the following and re-iterate my comments.
To reuse anon’s metaphor, WP is hardly the wheel of journal engines. If it is, then it’s pretty flat. Sure the sites that are made with it can LOOK awesome, but it’s what’s under the hood that I’m commenting on. The function NOT the form.
As far as my comparison between MT and WP, both suck from the programming side. One is written cleanly but performs slowly, the other is written sloppy but performs quite briskly.
@Anon: You speak down of the ‘mysterious programmer’ I mentioned, and yet you yourself opt to remain mysterious…

I’ve been trying to use WP 1.5 for my blog for a while now (I’m using Blogger at the moment
I have it installed and am playing around with it actually.
I’m having a bit of a problem figuring out how to create themes etc. I’d apprecaite it if you could post your experiences with that on here
